Or is it a Colony Sim?

The Game: Draculas Castle is a spoof horror platform adventure puzzle game with fighting included. For those of you old enough to remember, it’s probably best described as Datasofts ‘Bruce Lee’ mixed with ‘The Castles of Dr.Creep’ with a smattering of many others (Jet Set Willy, Hero of the Golden Talisman, Cauldron, Yie Ar Kung Fu, Pitfall, etc). Dracula first appeared in 1986's Castlevania, set in 1691. At this point the plot of the series was very simple – Simon Belmont takes up his ancestral weapon, the Vampire Killer whip, and ventures into Dracula's castle to defeat its proprietor. The original game has no in-game text to drive the story along.

Short Answer: Yes, Dracula’s Castle is indeed a Sim Tower game. Well, maybe a SimTower game is more accurate. Tower Sim perhaps?

I was recently re-tagging Dracula’s Castle on Steam to get some more accuracy out of the Steam algorithm and part of that is assigning genres and sub-genres to your game. In the end, I went with Colony Sim – because it seems to be the best fit – but I couldn’t not think of Sim Tower.

Dracula's Castle Game Walkthrough

(And thinking of colony building games, the idea of Dracula running a colony seems a bit absurd… Maybe I’ll do a sequel game: Dracula 2142, where he’s in charge of running a moonbase on Titan.)

If you’re not familiar with the term Sim Tower, let me explain. It’s a game that was released back in 1994, well actually it was called SimTower: The Vertical Empire.

This is well before The Sims began it’s domination run in the early 00’s. It was a curious game, originally a Japanese creation by Yoot Saito, one which got onto legendary SimCity creator Will Wright’s radar and was subsequently localized for Western audiences and rebadged with the Sim (or Sims?) brand.

The Sim spin-offs were usually very original, I remember as a kid being fascinated by SimAnt as well (the fact that it made me think of Honey I Shrunk the Kids probably helped). I loved SimTower for its originality at the time and in fact I had a lot of fun many years later with Star Wars: Tiny Death Star, which greatly reminded me of it. (It also happens to have the best Star Wars pixel art, ever. Not to mention the Imperial March brilliantly re-imagined as an elevator tune!)

So here’s to SimTower and the plucky young Yoot Saito! Maybe it’s time it officially got its own sub-genre?

To those of you coming back after reading Dev Diary #1, hey I made it back! I guess this isn’t technically a Dev Diary but I am working on something. Hopefully I’ll have it up soon.

A downloadable game for Windows

(The game's in development hell and probably won't be finished.)

Dracula's Castle is an action horror adventure game, inspired by great games such as Castlevania, Banjo Kazooie and 40 Winks. This is a beta version of Dracula's Castle, and I'm currently developing the rest of the game right now. You might come across a few bugs here and there but I tried to make this beta as polished and bug free as possible. The full version of the game was meant to come out in 2019 or 2020, but most likely this game will sit in the shadows for all eternity.

The Beta version features The Tutorial Area, Floor 1, The Basement, Floor 2, Floor 3 and Floor 4, so it'll be about an hour long, depending on how you play. Of course, the game needs more polish, better optimization, and such. That'll all be added in the full release of the game. So yeah, I hope you enjoy this new beta build of the game, and if you like it, consider donating to help support me to finish the game and make more random horror games along the way.

I hope you enjoy it!

Hey Dave when will the full release for Dracula's Castle come out.

Here's the post detailing what happened to Dracula's Castle. https://dave-microwaves-games.itch.io/draculas-castle-beta/devlog/114722/the-end-of-draculas-castle

dude!!!! this game is so good and i hate the green thing that comes out of nowhere

Hi there! Awesome game, I work with an indie publisher and we'd love to help you publish the game on Steam. If you're interested in working together feel free to reach out to me at deana@sedoc.net :)

Hey, thanks for checking out my game! Sounds like a pretty good offer, but I might think this through first, since the game's been in hiatus for a little while and it's still got a long way to go. But I'll be sure to contact y'all when I'm back to working on the project and nearing completion!

Hi! No problem and sounds great, looking forward to hearing from you :) Happy New Year!

OMG! I'm Romanglish! half American and half Romanian. Let's stay in touch. I love Romanian culture so darn much! :D

Hmm? The link doesn't work, though I don't understand why you linked that but didn't explain what it was.

and here we are! I return to Dracula's Castle and fight my way through ever increasing odds! Eventually saving myself along the way! Hope you enjoy Dave, I love your games, so well made!

the Wooer got stuck at one point btw, so you might look into that :)

Glad you enjoyed the beta! And that is most certainly odd how the Wooer got stuck. I gotta fix that right away!

Great game love the art style the game looks and feels amazing. The soundtrack / music in the game is really good and the story is too. I did find a glitch where Franken Rusty got stuck on a table but apart from that great game.

Glad you enjoyed the game man! I gotta fix that bug. Must have something to do with him being so big and that table being so small to him that he's able to climb on top of it and gets stuck on the lab equipment.

Okay, so honestly: this game blew all of your other ones away. I've obviously never played any of your Dracula's Castle builds, but I wish I had. Everything from the mechanics to how loveable the characters you encounter are was amazing. I could definitely feel the Banjo Kazooie and Castlevania feels. I didn't think such a mix could work so well! Thanks so much for making this!

So I did something a little different with this video: I've decided to make it into my very first Let's Play Movie! Complete with fun skits (commercials) in between certain chunks of the game and multiple versions of the let's play along with a 'top menu' video where you can choose whatever you wanna watch. I hope you like it as much as I liked your game!!

I'm really glad you enjoyed it! I put so much time and effort into this game, almost a whole year just to make it this far. I really hope the game gets more attention soon, cause right now it's doing pretty poorly. Worse than any of my other games unfortunately. :/

Ouch. People are really missing out. It’s a great game. This update was WAY more playable though. So I can definitely see it getting some traction. (And don’t waste your time watching them all lol. I recommend the [Full] version. Unless you watched my “commercials” individually already lol.

Yeah I watched the whole movie plus commercials, lol.

Draculas Castle Game

Whoa! Thank you! You deserve a prize for that, my friend!! :D

You already know that I had to do a let's play of this one! Even though it's only in BETA it was an absolute blast to play! The castle feels so massive! Also the boss battles were a tone of fun to get through! I will say the ghost boss battle I couldn't really figure out how to kill him, so I just ran away!

Dracula's Castle Wine

Once again you've done an amazing job and I can't wait for the next one! Keep it up my dude!

Thanks for playing this one man! Glad you enjoyed it. :D
Oh, and you can actually kill The Ghost Boss. Just fire some crossbow bolts while throwing holy water and it should kill him quickly.

I might play this for YouTube, if i dont, know that this is a really amazing game! :)

I really like it, but whenever i try to record the game it lags, i think my PC isnt powerfull enough to record and play the game at the same time.

However, just because i cant play this game dosnt mean i cant play one of your other games!
